Sterilizer chambers are subject to a build-up of hazardous surface contamination from detergents, wrapper chemicals, boiler chemicals, oxidation, stickers, and autoclave tape. Even with a weekly washing of the chamber, eventually contamination builds up and requires a more aggressive cleaning process.

AAMI ST79:2010 & A1:2010 & A2:2012, Sec 94.4 Sterilizers should be inspected and cleaned daily according to the manufacturer’s IFU. Weekly or other prescribed inspection and cleaning should be performed as specified in the manufacturer’s written IFU. Rationale Periodic inspection and cleaning reduce the frequency of equipment malfunction and the risk of accidental contamination of sterile items.

AORN Policies and procedures for routine cleaning of sterilizers, carts and exterior surfaces should be developed and implemented.
